How to Translate an EPUB Without Losing Formatting
To translate an EPUB without losing what matters, define what you need to preserve: every chapter and note, a usable table of contents, meaningful emphasis, illustrations and a comfortable reading order. Identical page breaks are usually not the goal of a reflowable ebook.
This is an author acceptance guide. It helps you decide whether a file and a proposed translation route are suitable, and whether the delivered edition passes the checks you need before publication.
Understand what an EPUB contains
An EPUB packages content documents, navigation, style information and other resources such as images. The W3C EPUB specification describes this structure. Translation changes text length and sometimes typography, so keeping the package intact does not ensure that every page will read well.
First establish whether your book is reflowable or uses a fixed layout. A text novel and a picture book with words positioned over artwork have different needs. Ask a formatter to inspect a complex file before buying a text-only translation service.
Make a source inventory
- Count chapters and list the opening and closing words of each.
- List front matter, appendices, bibliography and other end matter.
- Identify footnotes, endnotes, internal links and return links.
- Count essential images and flag text embedded in them.
- Record italics that distinguish thoughts, letters or another speaker.
- Check that you have permission to translate and adapt the content.
Keep an untouched source file. If the only copy is protected by DRM, obtain an authorized editable source; do not treat a conversion utility as permission to bypass restrictions.
Ask the provider about input and output separately
| Question | Why the answer changes your plan |
|---|---|
| Will I receive an EPUB? | Accepted EPUB input may still yield only plain text. |
| Are illustrations exported? | Keeping image files does not translate captions baked into pixels. |
| Are notes and navigation retained? | A readable main text can hide missing scholarly or reference material. |
| Can I edit the result? | Corrections need a practical route back into the publication file. |
| Is fixed layout supported? | Text expansion may require manual redesign. |
Test a difficult part, not only the opening
A plain first chapter may tell you little about a book with tables, recipes or notes later on. Choose an illustrated spread, a long heading and a page with linked notes. Compare their content and behavior before approving the approach for the whole edition.
If the tool offers only a preset opening sample, record that limitation. Your later full-file review must cover the structures that the sample did not test.
Read the exported file as a reader would
- Open the table of contents and follow each chapter link.
- Increase the font size and look for clipped text, awkward spacing and headings separated from content.
- Inspect images in light and dark reading modes where available.
- Follow a note and its return link. Check that numbering agrees with the text.
- Search for a recurring name and a distinctive term to spot inconsistent forms.
- Check the final paragraph, acknowledgments and links to other books.
Use more than one reading environment if your audience will. A formal check with EPUBCheck can identify structural problems, but a valid EPUB can still contain a poor translation or an unreadable table.
When to rebuild from the manuscript
If the exported EPUB loses essential structure, it may be better to revise an editable text and have a formatter create a new edition. Budget that work before accepting the cheapest translation option. PDF page images are not an equivalent replacement for an accessible, reflowable ebook.
Recheck the publication file after every material correction. The KDP readiness checklist covers the next release decision; the project guide helps specify the deliverables before work begins.
